This is a trustworthy saying… 2 Timothy 2:11
Paul wrote five “trustworthy sayings” in his New Testament letters. These sayings are worth meditating on and putting into practice. The first one occurs in 1 Timothy 1:15, “This is a trustworthy saying, that deserves full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” This is a great starting point as it tells why Jesus came–to save us sinners. His motivation was to save, not condemn. He came in great patience with grace. He laid the foundation for our forgiveness.
The next is in 1Timothy 3:1, “Here is a trustworthy saying: whoever aspires to be a leader desires a noble task.” Leadership stretches us and provides opportunities to help others develop to their full potential. Healthy leaders recognize their appointment is an assignment from God and regularly give Him thanks for their position.
Following that is 1 Timothy 4:9, “Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in the present life and in the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying, and deserves full acceptance.” How true. CrossFit workouts are amazing, but being fit with spiritual disciplines and godly living leads to inner peace with ourselves and right relationships with others.
The fourth faithful saying is a difficult one. “Here is a trustworthy saying: …If we endure hardship (with Him), we shall also reign with Him” 2 Timothy 2:11-12. Suffering hardship is no one’s favorite pastime. However, though difficulties in life are unavoidable, we do have the ability to control our attitude in the midst of hardship. Handling things in a healthy way comes first and the rewards will be come later. Lord, help us have trusting, hopeful hearts in the midst of life’s curve balls.
The fifth and final saying is in Titus 3:8 “This is a trustworthy saying, and I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.” This saying speaks of active and ongoing service to others. It values placing the needs of others above our own. This should be recognizable in our actions and in our words.
Treasure these sayings. Let them be a guide for your life and a comfort to your soul.
Blessings,
