Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. Matthew 11:28-29 The Message Bible (MSG)
I had someone check up on the condition of my soul this past week. During our brief conversation the questions she asked and the sincerity of her voice told me that her sole care was my soul care.
Taking the time to think through where our heads and hearts are is a needful exercise. Even if you consider yourself to be a pretty squared away person, I highly recommend taking time to survey your spiritual life. We easily allow things into our lives that wear us down, or we simply drift away from simple practices that keep our souls refreshed.
Without intentional care for our souls, we will eventually dry up. When the pace of life overtakes the health of your soul, the hazards ahead become simply unavoidable. Remember, even your spiritual activities can become meaningless, and if that happens, it’s emptiness to God, too.
There is no pill or potion to cure our ill, but I will share with you what was suggested to me. I was pointed back to some basic routines. Practices such as spending time alone in quietness, journaling, meditation on Scripture, and prayer are all important ingredients of soul care.
Now it’s your turn. Are you caring for your soul? Are there things you are doing that are damaging to your soul? Are you making the attempt to walk with God and learn of His ways? Will you pause and spend the time to be silent and hear God, or will you rush off to the next task?
A soul that is alive to God is enriched and enriches others. It can live freely and lightly through life in whatever it encounters. I encourage you to esteem soul care as vital and necessary for your quality of life. Let your soul care get the attention it deserves today.
Blessings,
