And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6
Psalm 23 is quoted at most memorial services. In this final verse of his poem, David reminds us that there is something amazingly wonderful awaiting us beyond this life—eternity with the Lord forever.
Thinking of heaven is wonderful to me. I haven’t earned it, I don’t deserve it, but nonetheless it’s mine. I am only a pilgrim, living in a tent, passing through this land. One day I will transition into my glorious body and live eternally with my Jesus.
The hope of heaven brings me strength. It stirs up in me a drive to complete the tasks assigned to me by God with vigor and zeal. Yet unseen, the hope of heaven causes my current sufferings to fade when compared to the glory that will be revealed when I meet Jesus face to face.
Heaven brings with it the beginning of eternal life with God where there is no more sickness or dying, just blessed happiness. Entering heaven for me will mark the end of the earthly segment of my journey. It is something I look forward to. I’m not anxious to get there, but “God has planted eternity in the hearts of men” Ecclesiastes. 3:10 TLB.
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him” 1 Corinthians 2:9.
Would I trade in my flimsy earthly tent for a glorious body that will live for all eternity in heaven? You bet I would! But while I’m here on earth, I want to be about my Great Shepherd’s business.
C.S Lewis wrote, “Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.” I hope your focus will be toward heavenly priorities so you can enjoy your experiences here on earth a little bit better.
